Manufacturing Design Engineer (MDE)
Logan designs, manufacturers, sells, and services high quality, precision laboratory instrumentation for the pharmaceutical, biotech, contract, government, and academic laboratory environments. Headquartered in Somerset, NJ, Logan manufacturers (assembles) products in Somerset and in Shanghai, China. We have a large engineering team co-located in NJ and China.
The Logan MDE plays a critical role in the product development and manufacturing processes. They are responsible for ensuring engineering, production, and QC documentation is complete, current, and controlled. They work closely with Product Management, Production Management, and Marketing to build the drawing trees, bills of material, and determine which assemblies will be sellable. In this role, the MDE will also make machine drawings and assembly drawings as needed under the supervision of the design engineer.
Responsibilities
- Revision control: Assigns the correct revision to drawings and associated documents, ensuring that everyone is working with the latest, correct versions of files.
- Workflow management: Configures and enforces workflows for document check-in, check-out, and approval, streamlining the entire engineering change process.
- Data security and access control: Establishes user permissions to control who can view, edit, and approve specific documents, ensuring data integrity and security.
- Bill of Materials (BOM) management: Integrates CAD data with item master records to manage BOMs, which can be configured for either top-down or bottom-up management.
- Drawing trees: Creates and maintains all drawing trees.
- Production documentation: Working with the manufacturing engineer or production manager, the MDE develops and maintains all production documentation including drawings, work instructions, procedures, etc.
- Part Numbers/Drawing Numbers: The MDE owns and controls all part numbers and drawing numbers for the company. If anyone needs a new part number, he assigns it and documents it.
- Draftsman: Working with the design engineers, the MDE will create machine/fabrication drawings, assemblies, and any other mechanical drawings as needed.
Skills
- Minimum 10-year mechanical engineering experience
- Minimum 5-year experience working for an ISO certified manufacturing company
- SolidWorks power user.
- Ability to create bills of material, drawing trees, assembly drawings/procedures, machine drawings, etc.
- Strong discipline in document control and revision control.
- Strong understanding of drawing trees and BOMs.
- Experience working with machining fabricators to address tolerance and other fabrication specification questions.
- Experience working with mechanical assemblers on a small production line.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
